Including a beloved pet in a marriage proposal has become increasingly popular. It's a heartwarming and unique way to pop the question, but is it the right choice for everyone? Let's dive into the pros and cons of involving your furry friend in this special moment.

Pros:

  • A Memorable Moment: A pet can add a touch of surprise and personalization to your proposal. It's a moment you and your partner will cherish forever. Seriously, think about how cute those pictures will look in the frames around your house!

  • A Heartwarming Photo Op: Picture-perfect proposal photos with your furry friend are guaranteed to melt hearts, including your own. Nothing will be cuter to look back on then you proposing to your partner with your furry friend as your co-conspirator.

Cons:

  • Unpredictable Behavior: Pets can be unpredictable! There's a risk of your pet not cooperating or even causing a distraction, like running around while you're proposing. However, this could be a funny memory to look back on too.

    • I recently tried to test out a proposal with two rowdy Frenchies and they were so overwhelmed with the new toys and the task at hand. So you really just need to decide if your pet is trained well enough to carry out this monumental task.

Tips for a Proposal with your pet

If you decide to include your pet, here are some tips to ensure a smooth and memorable experience:

  • Practice Makes Perfect: Spend some time practicing the proposal with your pet beforehand to gauge their reaction and minimize stress. If you're introducing a toy in the proposal, make sure your pet doesn't go crazy for the toy and forgets the task at hand. Maybe introduce the toy ahead of the proposal so they are more familiar with it and less excited. Note that this will only work if your pet isn't a habitual shredder like my dogs.

  • Choose the Right Setting: Select a calm and familiar environment where your pet feels comfortable. For example, consider doing it at home or in your backyard. This is somewhere they might get less distracted since they'll consider it their territory.

  • Have a Backup Plan: Be prepared for unexpected behavior. Have a backup plan, such as a simple ring presentation, in case things don't go as planned. You can also lean into the chaos. If your pet decides to run wild and free, you can still go ahead as planned, but just be okay with the fact that they're being silly!

Ultimately, the decision to include a pet in your proposal is a personal one. Consider your partner's preferences, your pet's temperament, and the potential risks and rewards before making a decision.
